Game 31

K.Kulaots-L.Nisipeanu

World Junior Championship, Medellin 1996

1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 Bc4 e6 7 0-0 Be7 8 Bb3 0-0 9 f4 b5 10 e5 dxe5 11 fxe5 Nfd7 12 Be3!?

Sacrificing the pawn in return for taking the sting out of ...Bc5 and for being able to play Qh5 with gain of tempo. White’s problem is that defending the pawn with 12 Bf4 blocks the f-file and Black can unravel fairly easily after 12...Nc5. However, that is a better course for White than the horribly materialistically 12 Qf3? which is deservedly punished by 12...Nxe5! 13 Qxa8 Qxd4+ 14 Kh1 Nbc6 with great compensation for the exchange.

White’s main alternative to Kulaots’ choice is actually to both attack and to defend e5 simultaneously with 12 Qh5. However, practice has shown that after 12...Bc5! 13 Be3 Bxd4! 14 Bxd4 Nc6 15 Be3 Ncxe5, White is struggling for sufficient compensation with ...Ng6 on the way to bolster up the black kingside.
